Sambar Masala Powder

You’ll never go back to store-bought sambar masala powder after you give this a try! You can make it in bulk and store it in an airtight container for ease.

Sambar Masala Powder


  • 2 1/2 tbsp coriander seeds
  • 1 1/4 tbsp toor dal (split pigeon peas)
  • 3/4 tbsp channa dal (split chickpeas)
  • 3/4 tbsp urad dal (split black matpe bean)
  • 4-5 nos dried whole red chilies
  • 1 tsp whole black pepper 
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/4 tsp asafoetida powder
  • 1 sprig fresh curry leaves 5-6 leaves


  • Dry roast each ingredients seperatly on low to medium heat stirring and tossing frequently until they are aromatic.
  • Grind them into a powder when they are cool. I use a coffee grinder and it works great.
  • You can make a large batch and store it in an airtight container.
